Once upon a time…
A newly-married couple were preparing dinner – a delicious pot roast. As the husband peeled the potatoes, he intently observed his wife meticulously preparing the roast to go into the oven. He noticed that she trimmed the ends off the slab of beast before dropping it in the pan and placing it in the oven.
He inquired, “Honey dearest, Sweet Pumpkin Pie, why do you trim the ends of the roast?”
She replied, “What do you mean? It makes it taste better.”
Her husband, a huge fan of Alton Brown, responded, “How could it make it taste better? Wouldn’t it dry the meat out?” Finally, feeling the pain of his paycheck, he quipped, “And also, not for nothing, we’re wasting about 10% of the meat.”
Once confronted with her dear husband’s logic, she responded, “Well, I don’t know. That’s just how my mom always did it. You’d have to ask her.”
Intrigued, the husband called his wife’s mother the next day and asked, “Why do you cut the ends off the pot roast before cooking it?”
His Mother-in-Law paused, thought for a moment, and then replied, “Oh, honey, I don’t know. That’s just how my mother always did it.”
Curious, the husband called his wife’s grandmother. “Granny Smith,” he asked, “Why did you always cut the ends off the pot roast before cooking it?”
Granny chuckled. “Oh honey,” she explained, “back then, we were so poor that we only owned one pan – a tiny little pan. The roast was always too large so I simply trimmed ends to make it fit.”
And so, a long-standing family tradition, passed down through generations, was finally explained. It was a simple solution to a problem that no longer existed, yet it had been faithfully followed for years.
Often, things are done a certain way simply because that’s how they’ve always been done, without questioning the reason behind the practice.
